Yuri Romano could hardly contain his emotions after guiding Italy past Poland and into the final of the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship.

Even with tears flowing after the semifinal, the opposite hitter knows the job is far from over. His focus now turns to recovery and preparation as the defending champions face one final hurdle against Bulgaria.

Italy delivered a composed performance at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, taking full advantage of the absence of Polish captain Bartosz Kurek, sweeping the match 25-21, 25-22, 25-23, and securing a return trip to the gold medal match.

Their next challenge, however, promises to be formidable. A young Bulgarian squad, led by Aleksandar and Moni Nikolov, awaits in the championship clash.

“I was very happy. I cried a little because the emotion was really strong. But now, we are just playing the finals,” Romano, the 28-year-old opposite hitter, said after the win.

With less than a day separating the semifinal and the final, there’s little time for celebration. Italy must focus on recovery while preparing for the unpredictability of Bulgaria’s fast-rising team.

“Now we have to try to reset, rest a bit. There isn’t much time, so we need to scout the other team and be ready for another great match,” he added.

Romano led Italy offensively, scoring a game-high 15 points on 12 attacks, two blocks, and one ace during the 1-hour, 25-minute conquest of Poland. He will be counted on to deliver once more as Italy chases its second consecutive world championship title.
