Sports Turismo Alliance Philippines praised the country’s first-ever hosting of the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Volleyball Championship, held from September 12 to 28, as a major boost for future economic opportunities.

Charles Lim, President of Sports Turismo Alliance Philippines, emphasized the importance of bringing international sporting events to the Philippines to strengthen tourism. He commended the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) for taking on the ambitious task of hosting one of the biggest volleyball events in the world.

“That is something the entire country should be proud of,” Lim said. “Volleyball may not yet be the most popular sport here, but I encourage other sports organizations to follow PNVF’s lead when organizing international events in the Philippines.”

The spotlight on sports tourism development grew as the Department of Tourism and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), led by Chairman Patrick Gregorio, collaborated on efforts to bid for future sporting events.

“We cannot go wrong with sports tourism,” Lim explained. “It is one of the fastest-growing segments in the global tourism industry, accounting for about 20 percent of international tourist arrivals. While we may not yet have exact figures for the Philippines, events like this clearly boost our economy. Tourists may not come to play, but they come to watch, enjoy the tournament, and participate in other recreational activities.”

A total of 32 teams, including 31 international teams, competed in the FIVB World Championship. The event also welcomed FIVB President Fabio Azevedo, top global volleyball officials, and international media.

From the 31 foreign teams, approximately 1,500 players and coaches—not including their families or companions—experienced Filipino hospitality at venues such as the Araneta Coliseum, Mall of Asia Arena, and official hotels.

“This is a proud moment for our country,” Lim said. “Other nations will envy our hosting. PNVF, led by President Ramon ‘Tats’ Suzara, did a remarkable job bringing the games here. I hope other sports will follow suit to further promote tourism and grow the economy.”

Lim also expressed gratitude to the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), headed by President Abraham Tolentino, and various national sports associations (NSAs) for their active support in hosting international tournaments.

Founded by Lim, Sports Turismo Alliance Philippines is a privately funded organization dedicated to promoting sports tourism nationwide.

Looking ahead, Lim hopes that future tournaments will expand beyond Metro Manila. “People in the provinces are eager to see these players in action,” he said.
