As promised, Leo Ordiales bounced back in a big way and powered Alas Pilipinas to a historic first win in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship.
After a jittery two-point debut against Tunisia in the opener, Ordiales redeemed himself in style, exploding for 21 points as the Filipinos stunned African champion Egypt, 29-27, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, to capture the country’s first-ever victory on the world stage Tuesday night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
“I’m so happy that I was able to redeem myself and help this team win,” Ordiales said. “I didn’t just contribute; I was able to help the team win. The happiness was doubled because now we still have a shot at reaching the Round of 16.”
The 22-year-old opposite spiker teamed up with Bryan Bagunas and Marck Espejo, who finished with 25 and 13 points, respectively.
With the triumph, Alas Pilipinas forced a four-way tie at 1-1 in Pool A, keeping their chances alive for a Round of 16 berth when they battle Iran on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Just like how he bounced back from his rough debut, Ordiales said he will hit the reset button again to ensure he has the right mindset for the do-or-die clash.
“For me, I just focused on doing the role that was given to me. Of course, I also try to learn from my teammates. I always tell myself that I need to help them too, because they can’t carry the team on their own. That’s always been my mindset,” he added.
