Driven by a goal that goes beyond wins and losses, brothers Adis and Mirza Lagumdžija are making their mark for Türkiye at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship, aiming to continue their father’s legacy.
Their father, Ekrem, was a celebrated player who won professional titles in the former Yugoslavia Championship and the Serbia and Montenegro Cup, while also playing a key role on Yugoslavia’s national team.
“It’s amazing because we are continuing our father’s legacy,” said Adis after leading Turkey to a 3-0 sweep in Pool G.
“Our father was also a volleyball player; he played in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Competing on the highest stage alongside my brother is an incredible feeling,” added the 26-year-old opposite hitter.
Guiding them on this journey is Turkey head coach Slobodan Kovač, a former teammate of their father.
With his insight and experience, Kovač is committed to helping Adis and Mirza achieve the lofty goals they have set for themselves and the national team.
“You know, I played with Adis and Mirza’s father for six years. We didn’t just play together; we lived together, even slept in beds near each other. That’s why I know the brothers so well,” said Kovač, who recruited them to play for Fenerbahce.
“We are good friends, and this is one of the reasons they respect me so much, both on and off the court. They try to do everything I say,” he added.
Building on their father’s legacy, the Lagumdžija brothers are setting their sights even higher—determined to maximize their potential and push Türkiye toward the world’s elite, all while honoring the lessons and guidance their father gave them.
