Italy’s players often spoke about their bond, saying they felt more like a family than just teammates during their stay in the Philippines.
That closeness was evident in every interaction. Hugs and kisses on the cheek were freely exchanged among teammates, coaches, federation staff, and even the Italian media covering the tournament.
The family spirit shone brightest on Sunday night, when the Azzurri clinched their second consecutive FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship title at the expense of Bulgaria.
Captain Simone Giannelli made sure to honor teammate Daniele Lavia, who was forced to miss the trip due to a finger injury.
Before stepping onto the podium, Giannelli held up Lavia’s jersey and wore it backward so his name faced the crowd, ensuring that his absent teammate was part of the celebration.
Giovanni Sanguinetti, sidelined by a right ankle injury, was also honored by the team.
“No, the team, the team decided to bring the jersey. We are like a family,” Giannelli said.
“Unfortunately, Daniele is at home because of an injury to his fingers before we started our journey here in the Philippines,” he added.
Lavia, who covered the tournament from home as part of Italy’s live broadcast team, shared an emotional moment with Giannelli. The two exchanged words and tears during the broadcast.
“For me, especially, but for us, it’s hard because Daniele deserves to be here with us, to win this gold medal with us. But you know, this is life,” Giannelli said.
