Alas Pilipinas’ historic first win in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship is proof that Filipino men’s volleyball players are truly world-class.
Bryan Bagunas spearheaded the charge with 25 points in Alas’ breakthrough 29-27, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21 victory over Egypt on Tuesday, electrifying the home crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena.
And the Philippine captain believes this is just the beginning.
“I think this is the start of something big. It shows we’re not just limited to the SEA Games or Asian Games—we can also compete at the World Championship level,” said Bagunas. “We really just enjoyed the game, and we were able to apply everything we learned from our coaching staff. That made a huge difference.”
Bagunas, 27, has already showcased his talent internationally, playing in Japan, winning a championship in Taiwan, and dominating the local volleyball scene in the UAAP and Spikers’ Turf.
But nothing, he says, compares to representing the flag. Bagunas previously led the Philippines to a silver medal in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, but doing so on the world stage—at home—is even more fulfilling.
“It’s an honor to contribute my skills here, especially in our own country,” Bagunas said. “It hits differently when you play in front of your fellow Filipinos. The pride, the energy—it’s something special. You really feel the love and support from the fans.”
With a chance to make a historic Round of 16 appearance, Bagunas is determined to show that the Philippines belongs among the world’s best when they face Iran in a do-or-die clash on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
“I believe we can go really far,” he added. “The Philippines is often seen as the underdog, but with hard work and the support of Filipino fans, we can push ourselves and compete with high-level teams. We’re capable of giving our best.”
